A few weeks ago I was invited to join the Check-In Check-Out (CICO) program at our PBIS school. What a delightful experience that is turning out to be. By investing just a few minutes of time with my 'at risk' student each day, I am already seeing the positive effects of this research-driven, simple intervention.
We meet at the beginning and end of each school day for just a few minutes. We chat about his interests, family, pets and hobbies. We talk about challenges at school. I offer support, advice and encouragement. Sometimes we sit and chat, sometimes we walk the hallways together, like old friends taking a stroll in the park. I give no negative responses and impose no consequences. I am the boy's special support person, his cheerleader, I've got his back. We have quickly built a trusting relationship.
It works for him - His teachers are seeing a marked improvement in his communication choices and application to tasks.
It works for me - I'm enjoying getting to know more about this student, seeing him make progress. Perhaps selfishly, I'm also gaining a sense of satisfaction, knowing that I'm a vital part of the team that is empowering him to succeed at school after years of struggle.
